Lower Makefield is located in Bucks County, Pennsylvania with a population of 32,559. It is usually referred to as “Yardley” due to the prominence of Yardley Borough in that area. However, Yardley Borough is much smaller by both population and land area, and is surrounded by Lower Makefield on three sides. Richard Hough is credited with naming Makefield Township. He was a provincial councilor and may have chosen the name Makefield as an Americanization of the name “Macclesfield”, his native home in Cheshire, England.
